In case you don’t know who Taher El Gamal is
I’ve noticed that most Egyptians are only aware of Ahmad Zewail as a noticable famous scientist because of his Nobel prize in Chemistry.
If you haven’t heared of the outstanding Egyptian-American cryptographer Taher El Gamal, then I suggest you go read his biography here.
The ElGamal algorithm is now used in the free GNU Privacy Guard software, recent versions of PGP, and other cryptosystems.

Well Abed, there is hundreds of Arabs in the United States and Europe that developed many algorithms and ideas that are beacons in industry and science.. But of course this is not tantamount to Nobel Prize research quality (i.e. Zewail’s work). Taher El-Gamal is one of the pioneers in cryptography and coding… thanks for sharing.

Best place to send this is to Jim Zogby of Arab American Institute where there is an ongoing work to list “famous” Arab Americans (http://www.aaiusa.org/arab-americans/23/famous-arab-americans) Why not send them your link.
Their site is at http://www.aaiusa.org/

YES … Abed … Awesome
I’ve been talking about the guy for years. And no one seems to pay attention. Through my work with cryptosystems, encryption etc .. He comes as one of the most notable scholars of his time
Wanna know something even better? Most of his stuff was done in th 80’s! Imagine? the 80’s before encryption became a common household name.
Anyway, his work doesn’t just appear in open source applications, But in heavyweight applications from RSA and Verisign .. Amazingly noteworthy.

yes it is, and he’s very famous

no Al gamal, it’s “ElGamal” , in Egyptian accent

I’m, unlike you, not fond of cryptography itself, it’s pure..im just interested in their applications

It really pisses me off, how the cryptography field is dominated by Israelis.
It’s really great to see an Egyptian cryptographer.
