The rich, the filthy rich, and the not so filthy rich. I’m not sure if we can distinguish between different levels of filthiness. I’m not an economist, never was, and never will be. But Amman is becoming worse everyday.
People are either too rich, too cool, or else they are classified as Nawar. The 7afartal. Those evil poor guys who don’t have enough money to buy clothes from expensive malls, those girls who aren’t cool enough to drive Mercedes Benz and can’t afford a Chanel dress.
This is nasty.
I’m not talking about private corporations. Those illegitimate private tyrannies ! No, this is not what I’m really talking about. I’m talking about people. About “cool” people who walk in the streets of Amman, with headsets and empty brains. Those who don’t know anything about the history of Jordan. Those who can’t talk about their country abroad.
Those fools, who classified people as either cool or 7afartal. How could they judge the poor ?? Just because they don’t have enough money to buy cars (or they’re not stupid enough to take loans to buy cars) and use public transportation!
Speaking of public transportations, I used to roam East Amman with less than 1 JD! can anybody tell me why can’t we go to certain places in West Amman using public transportation ?? Abdoun for example ??
Jordan is not West Amman. West Amman is not Jordan. Jordan is Petra. Jordan is Kerak, and Umm Qais. Jordan is the beautiful mountains of Ajloun. Jordan is the strong Refugee camps. Jordan is land of Jordanians, Palestinians, and Caucasians. All under one flag, with common convictions, sharing one beautiful dream of living peacefully.
Being filthy rich means you’ve got lots of money. Nothing wrong with having so much money that it comes out of your nostrils. But it’s a felony to forget about those who live in slums! In refugee camps, in villages. Not only did they forgot about those poor, but also they’re classifying them as the ” evil not-so-cool 7afartal ” who uses public transportation and who don’t go to “Blue Fig” cafe.
What can I say ?? Ignorance is awful.
What can we do?
I urge all my fellow bloggers to write about this very same issue. Even if you’re not in Jordan, write about it in your country.
Talking and writing about an issue can affect the way people think and behave, so don’t underestimate the power of ideas!
If you’re not a blogger, you can always talk about this ugly disease to your friends, family, colleagues, ..etc. Nothing is inevitable, everything can be reversed.

Hi Abed, thank for writing about the subject. I think that your post is a bit off topic :P, but maybe not calling people 7afartal based on their class can be helpful.
I don’t think that 7afartali is based on money. You can find many rich people who are 7afartal in their manners and even in the way they dress. 7afartali is more of a desrcribtion of someone without good manners than someone who is poor.
Maybe yes, it can be related to the class, as poor people usually don’t get the same amount of education and care that rich people do, and as a result it is more likely to turn into a 7afartali if you are a poor person than if you are a rich one.
Anyway, thanks for you income

Yes, It’s a different topic by itself. Though it’s related somehow. Of course, many rich are “7afartal”..but I found the classification to be strongly related to the money and certain class, a very rich class.

ummmm…
Levels is something Natural in every society, but classifying is a big dangerous problem, coz it just rise the fear in the rich’s eyes, and hate in the poor eye’s.
but again, it’s a normal thing in any economic society, there is rich, there is poor, and there is hate, exept Islam that found a smart and simple way to turn this hate to a mechanism of contribution and solidarity..a part of the money of rich people goes to the poor people…Zakah !

I think the Jordanian government should actually forget about West Amman for a while, and focus its efforts on improving the living conditions and standards for people in the East Amman. There should be some kind of balance. I mean seriously, when you compare both areas, it seems like you are looking at 2 different countries, which is simply unfair and unacceptable. I know our government is not a rich one, but I am sure some of the money they spend could be used more wisely.
This issue has been haunting me for a while now. Poverty on a global level. Of course you have hunger and disease in addition. What can we as individuals do to make the world a better place? This world is OUR world after all!
Good post Abed

and hence we need to change what we don’t like.

How services and other infrastructure is poured into west Amman, when the only entertainment for boys in Jabal El Jofeh is the broken water pipe down the street! While their families are deprived of water for 3,4,5 even six days a week .. Contrast that with the swimming pools in west Amman .. and you have yourself proof of million things
But honestly, I see no light at the end of this tunnel.. The rich will get richer, and the poor will get poorer …

Well, am Lebanese and we are no stranger in Lebanon to the subject you are discussing..We have been suffering from this problem for years, add to it the never ending wars etc…In Lebanon, the rich are getting richer with much arrogant attitude, of course, and the poor became “mou3dameen”..Middle class has disappeared to be the new poor, who survive on very little..But this class of people in Lebanon are dillusional and living on loans to maintain a certain status, and further creating different type of problems..Needless to say that the govenment is non existent..Am sorry, I know you are talking about Jordan but we are all suffering and misery loves company, right ??

i don’t think that talking about it really helps… i don’t think that decision makers who have the power in their hands to actually do something about it give any care to what a bunch of Jordanian bloggers talk about.
and the public themselves are adapting to live that way…check out the girls in the Jordanian universities who come from (any place that is not west Amman-although even this might be too general and inaccurate) they do not attend university for the sake of pursuing advanced studies or any such thing…they’re there to find the one(s) who will pull them out of their swamp like lives.
and the people who live in such poverty aren’t really complaining, or maybe they’re not putting their hearts and souls into changing their lives and voicing out their concerns about where we seem to be heading. They are lost in their ignorance, and i don’t see any excuse for those who CAN’T have elementary education to begin with.
if you can’t go to school you can still read a book or teach yourself how to read a book….
the ones who have to support entire households at a young age who are orphans or with disabled parents might be many but they’re not everyone…there are also MANY who choose not to get their education and these are more to blame than anyone else. if you won’t fight your fight no one will fight it for you. and if you don’t get an education to elevate your level of life then your voice if you choose to speak up will never be heard.
and then you’ll be just as bad as the ones who call you a 7afartali.
the problem is in ignorance on both ends of the line; the filthy reach and the living in filth poor.

Faten:
Dear Faten,
Don’t underestimate the power of public. Let’s not write about the issue and then sit and wait for result, things don’t work out this way.
By writing about the issue, we can bring an issue to attention, not because decision makers will read it. No, but because some people somewhere will read it and start thinking about it, probably talking about it.
by talking about an issue, you bring to discussion, this is how it might see the light.
We both agree that “ignorance” is the problem. But excuse me please to elaborate a little bit: The Rich are ignorant because they live in ignorant society and/or they are stupid.
On the other hand, the Poor are ignorants because they don’t have a choice! They have to work 12 hrs /day to put food on table.
Thanks for your opinion, I highly appreciate it. how about writing about it your blog ??

I enjoyed reading your post. It shows that you have such a big heart.
But, I have to say that there are some points which you haven’t taken into consideration, and yeah I know that you aren’t an economist, but when discussing such an issue it can’t be taken from one angle only, since when it comes to economy, it has many levels, many perspectives, and many factors…
The case here doesn’t have to do with the rich, or even the poor people,,, our economy is infected with the political issues that happens around us, the regional wars that had happened in the past ten years has smashed the middle class in Jordan and led them either to the upper class or the lower class. One of the causes was the high rate of inflation that accompanied the expansion of people who has chosen Jordan as a shelter for its stable environment. To make it simple, you had like 10 people wanting a box of tomato for like 1 JD for example, but now you have like 50 people wanting the same box of tomato, and so the price increased dramatically since it is a supply and demand issue and you have people that actually were able to pay 100 times more than the original. This also can be applied to the construction materials, and so on.
Besides, globalization and world’s economy has their huge impact of our economy. And Lets not forget about the demographic change, which is also changing the world’s economy and thus affecting us.
Maybe your post wanted to address some people’s attitude here in Jordan as well, and I totally agree regarding what Jordan really is. Jordan is what you have said above and even more, it’s all the cities, villages, mountains combined together…Our culture, civilization and the heritage that we hold is Jordan…I only disagree with you with generalizing, you know , regarding the attitude itself… not all rich people are like that, not all poor people are like that….. Maybe the majority are, maybe not, it depends on the people whom you dealt with or whom you heard from…
Again, I enjoyed reading your post, you made me think for a moment, and I just love that

It’s going to be worst for poor people pretty soon, with whole sale of the country to those sleazy investors ,I only can see very bleak future for 95% of the people of Jordan
Capitalism and market “free” economy are going to eliminate any chance for the poor(by the way people are poor because of the rich and their miserable economic policies, capitalism and Free market are not about employing people but deploying them and exploiting their the fruits of their labour.
If we keep adopting “free”(which is not free) market policies,I will say this 3alena al3wad.

hello, like ur post a lot, like the fact that u tailed it with a simple action: let us all at least talk about it
fantasia really discussed the economic power and was right about avoiding generlization, but i dont think u were addressing the range of people, rather tagging those already having that attitude, so if we’re talking about tomato we cant say all tomato is rotten, but if we are talking about rotton tomato it is definitely true to say “all rotten tomato smells bad :)” that goes to fantasia
my input into this that i did not catch in the comments is that the problem isnt really in rich people’s attitude, its in the poor peoples reaction to it, ya3ni when a dumb student tags the smartest as nerd, who cares? and our mentality in this society is that we all should be cool like the filthy rich, hey i cant drive with this car all the way to abdoon, shoo bedhom el nas ygooloo 3anni? unfortunately that is a very masked problem that even my closest friends act this way without knowing it… next time u drive with ur honda 1993 that u worked hard to get, look at the benz car driver (who are complete copies of each other) and say, IM DIFFERENT! IM UNIQUE, I DESERVE IT!
they wont stop it, but they will smell bad
so u see, if nobody gives a shit about those “cool-replicates” with their underwear showing above their pants they will soon be tagged as “dumb-replicate”

I believe, the responses u got r enough to show the importance of this topic,,*BA7AYEEK*
About filthy rich: yeah there are so many filthy Richies in here..wiz filthy traits as well..their lifes are based on looks, and materialistic stuffs, and those traits un fortunatley pass from generation to another and even worse!! at the same time i dont say that all of those rich peeps are like that a few are aware of wots going on..
About *7afartal*..to me a 7afartale person is a person who is not well educated, stupid, and very shallow, and cares about the present time..thats from my prespective..it could be a richie or a poor or a midst
Note:since i came to live in here..i noticed the sever economical difference among people, lets talk about Teens *for being a teen*,richie teens got everything they fancy, midst teens do get wot they want but not everything, not exactly and not everytime, poor teens got nothing at all..imagine a combination of those three type in a friendship *suppose*..it wont be any problem to the richie cuz he got the money simply, the midst will keep nagging his parents, and try to copy the richie, meanwhile the poor will get sick of this life and get complecated, and regret for the day he was born….
why people dont think of others?why they dont think about others feelings, wot would happene IF A BILLIONAIR spent a million for poor people?! Why we only care about ourselves…. lets show some love and respect for this life

Yes, I also feel it is very strange to see the huge wealth gap in Jordan.
There are street children who are struggling in Amman who are trying hard to get bread for their family, while there are kids driving Mercedes given by their parents.
Personally I respect those who work hard to support themselves or their families.
I dont like people who are lazy and just live on their parents money or those who enjoy the life with the money they earned with no pain or no effort.
Anyway, those snobbish people will be punished in the future, i hope…

By the way I noticed majority of those young rich people are Christian.
So ..isn’t it more like Christian vs Muslim
rather than Rich vs Poor??
Sorry if my opinion is incorrect.
I just felt like that in Abdoun or Sweifieh,
where many Christian people live….

I just wanted to say it might come from
not only wealth gap,
but also cultural gaps between those two religions.

man…I have lived outside jordan for a while where I found diversity in teh streets….in my appartments building…when you say diversity you realy mean it…arab, african, american, canadian, uboriginal etc…..but I’ve never thought I would find such stupid attitude in Jordan where they defferenciate between the north, the south and amman. such stupid mentality is rely killing me some times. you pop up soem times with those who neve left amman …..and they have this attitude that they are living in amman……so what?!!!!!!
